"Brief Devotions For Busy Lives" By the late Rev. Dr. Mary B. Johnson: 1 Corinthians 2:9-12

November 19

"That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.” But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets. No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit. And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us." -Paul in 1 Corinthians 2:9-12 (NLT)

Secrets are wonderful things- especially if they are about awesome gifts someone has for us. Paul says you can't even begin to imagine all the good gifts God has for you! Indeed, God's rewards and blessings are without limit both in this life and the next. Knowing God's wonderful presents and beautiful eternal future are yours can give hope and courage to persevere and endure hardship. No matter what befalls, remember this world is only temporary. The best is yet to come! God will not only create a new heaven and a new earth (Is.65:17), but promises we will live with him forever in paradise. Until then, Paul says the Holy Spirit will comfort and guide you and reveal God's secrets in his time. When discouraged, Corinthians says we need to remember "God's deep secrets" including his amazing plan of Jesus' death and resurrection that has ensured your salvation and eternal life. Yet, this powerful "secret" is revealed only to those believing God speaks truth. By trusting in Christ, you have all needed to be secure in this life and the next. The powerful redeeming secret nature of God's truth can't be grasped by even the wisest of people unless they accept and know Jesus. Because Satan's greatest power is deception, we all need the Holy Spirit to reveal secret truth so we can understand reality from God's perspective. No matter how difficult your circumstances are, remember that God's plans for you are wonderful beyond belief. Today's troubles can and will become tomorrow's blessings with God on your side!

Prayer: Holy Spirit, Help me know God's secrets. Amen.
