June 7
"And he said, 'Come'. And Peter got out of the boat, and walking on the water, went to Jesus. But when he saw the wind he was in fear and, starting to go down, he gave a cry, saying, Help, Lord. And straight away Jesus put out his hand and took a grip of him, and said to him, O man of little faith, why were you in doubt?" Matthew 14:29-31 (BBE)
June is generally a mild month with moderate temperatures and gentle breezes. Yet it can also produce unexpected storms that seem to arise suddenly out of nowhere. If we are fishing or boating on a lake the unexpected rapid weather changes can be very disorienting requiring wise actions or we can not only get soaked but end up in an overturned boat. The Sea of Galilee in Jesus day was much like this in its weather patterns with sudden storms appearing out of nowhere leading to dangerous weather conditions and high winds with pelting rain. It was such conditions Matthew writes about in today's scripture. Yet as long as Peter kept his eyes on Jesus, he was able to walk on the water. But once he took his eyes off the Lord and let the fear of the storm overtake him, he began to sink.
Most of us are much like Peter. Although we start out with good intentions, sometimes our faith falters. This doesn't necessarily mean we have failed. Ultimately, when Peter's faith faltered, he reached out to Christ, the only one who could help. He was afraid but he still looked to Christ. When you are apprehensive about the troubles around you and doubt Christ's presence or ability to help, stay calm and remember that he is the only one who can really help you. At such times we all have a choice whether we will sink or swim. However, the only way to stay safe is to put your hand in the hand of Christ who is always reaching out to you through any storm life may bring. He will never forsake you or let you go! You are more precious to our Lord than you can comprehend. He loved you enough to not only live for you, but to die for you. May the peace of Christ bless you today and still any storms in your life!
Prayer: Jesus, Help me to believe walking on water with you is possible for me. May I trust that you will never let me go. Amen
Meditation For The Day: Storms intimidate. Jesus can liberate.
