June 1
"There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good." -Paul in 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 (NIV)
June is a beautiful month promising much joy as the days unfold! The name "June" is Latin in origin and derived from Juno, the Roman goddess of protection, strength and marriage. The Giving and Receiving of Gifts is often an important June topic and focus for June weddings, graduations, and other events. Questions arise like which are appropriate, wanted, or welcome? How much do they cost? Yet we often don't realize God gives us free gifts-joyful, abundant ones bringing lasting benefits and new opportunities! Do you know what gifts the Holy Spirit has given you? Every believer is given spiritual gifts! Our faith journey often involves the discovery, enjoyment, and use of these beautiful gifts. The Holy Spirit is completely involved in giving, using, and empowering us with these remarkable gifts. While lists of spiritual gifts are long, the Bible says they include healing, miracles, teaching, prophesy, guidance, counsel, wisdom, encouragement, preaching, etc. While our specific gifts and places of service vary, all gifts are valuable not only in empowering us but also strengthen our churches.
God has created a unique and important place in this world for you! While gifts and ministries vary and may overlap, each person has a vital, important, specialized, God-designed role. Part of the exciting adventure of following Christ involves discovering your gifts and using them to touch, enrich, uplift, and bless others. Then we not only bring joy to ourselves but to our families, communities, and churches. Yet Paul warns us not to be envious of other's gifts. Gifts vary but all are essential. One gift is never more important or better than another! If you have the gift of encouragement but not preaching who can say which is more important? If you don't yet know what your spiritual gifts are, find people who can help you discover this treasure. Then unwrap and use your unique gifts. It will transform all around you because YOU are invaluable and unique in God's sight. Your gifts are both priceless and needed!
Prayer: Holy Spirit, Thank you for giving me awesome gifts! May I find and unwrap them all with joy and gratitude. Amen
