"Brief Devotions For Busy Lives" by Rev. Dr. Mary Johnson: Matthew 11:28-30

 May 21

"Come to me all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke on you and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and my load is not hard to carry.” - Matthew 11:28-30 (NET)

A yoke is a heavy wooden harness that fits over the shoulders of an ox. It is attached to carts the oxen are pulling. We may be carrying heavy burdens of excessive demands, sin, oppression, persecution, weariness, illness, financial or family problems. No matter the issue, Jesus promises in Matthew to free you of these burdens by sharing your yoke, with the weight falling on his shoulders. Suddenly you are participating in life's responsibilities with a powerful Partner.

Have you ever had a night when you just can’t seem to sleep because all the trials and burdensome worries of the day keep racing thru your mind? If you are able to relax and pray it is easier to stop worrying. If any of us can leave our burdens in the Lord's hands, insomnia may disappear, and we end up feeling much better the next day. While it takes practice and effort to successfully give our burdens to the Lord, only Jesus can give our minds the rest we desperately need from fears, apprehensions, worries, and anxieties. While God doesn't take care of all of our problems right away, we can trust He knows when the time is right to do so. How relaxing it is when we trust our Lord to carry all our worries. When we do, we find ourselves drifting off to sleep far more easily. While sleeping enough is vital for our bodies, praying to God is even more important for our hearts, minds, and souls! The rest that Jesus promises is love, healing, and peace but not the end of all labor or problems. A relationship with Jesus will increasingly change meaningless worry and wearisome problems into spiritual freedom and restful peace even in the midst of our struggles because He is carrying the weight of our burdens for us!

Prayer: Jesus, Thank you for carrying my burdens Amen.
