Being Disciples of Christ

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13: 34-35 (NIV)

Perfect love is the goal of Christian life. We are commanded to love one another, as Jesus loved us. Yet it this really possible? For we are mere mortals, imperfect in every way. Yet if we approach this command from the perspective that “I am only human” we miss the point.

Perfect love is not something we can achieve on our own. It is the gift of God’s grace that enables us to love. And our desire to know God not only moves us closer to loving God, but closer to loving others.

Live out of and in the love of God.[1]

And perhaps, if we look for God’s presence in others, then maybe we can begin to see each person as being as made in the image of God.

Lord, strengthen us to love one another as you have loved us. Amen.
