"Brief Devotions For Busy Lives" by Rev. Dr. Mary Johnson: Psalm 9:9-10

 May 23

"The Lord will be a high tower for those who are crushed down, a high tower in times of trouble; And those who have knowledge of your name will put their faith in you; because you, Lord, have ever given your help to those who were waiting for you." - Psalm 9:9-10 (BBE)

Many years ago a young man, Charles Gabriel, was choir director of Grace Methodist Church in San Francisco and was reflecting on a poem about a lighthouse watchman when he was asked to compose a special song for the Missions celebration at his church. As Gabriel pondered over the meaning of the poem, he watched the numerous beams from the high towers of lighthouses in San Francisco Bay search back and forth across dark night skies offering hope, guidance, rescue, and life to the shipwrecked and lost. Inspired by the rescue lights in the night sky, Gabriel wrote a timeless gospel song "Send The Light" one dark night in 1890. The vital message still reaches us today when it reminds us:

"There’s a call comes ringing o’er the restless wave,
“Send the light! Send the light!”
There are souls to rescue, there are souls to save,
Send the light! Send the light!
Let it shine from shore to shore!
"Let us pray that grace may everywhere abound,
And a Christ like spirit everywhere be found,
Send the light! Send the light!
Let us not grow weary in the work of love,
Let us gather jewels for a crown above,
Send the light! Send the light!"

We today may also "send the light" as we act upon God's urgent call to be a Lighthouse of Hope and High Tower to our community in dark times. May we also persevere and stand tall in the stormy days we live in. You are needed as never before to bring Christ's light to the lost all around us still downing in despair!

Prayer: Jesus, May I become your Lighthouse today. Amen.
