"Brief Devotions For Busy Lives" by Rev. Dr. Mary Johnson: John 14:6

 May 4

"Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." - John 14:6 (NKJV)

May is a wonderful time to take road trips as the sun warms and unfamiliar destinations beckon with new adventures. Yet most of us have experienced that embarrassing moment when we found ourselves lost and wandering on unfamiliar roads. We have a choice at those times to find someone to ask for directions or refuse to do so. If our pride and illusion of self-sufficiency gets the best of us, we often continue wandering until we are hopelessly lost. Our spiritual life is very similar to this all too familiar situation of being lost on the by-ways of uncharted country roads. A healthy spiritual life can become confused and lost with shallow expositions and commentaries, other people's interpretation of scripture, enticing parts of other religions, or even TV evangelists offering financial security. Yet Jesus tell us in today's scripture that if we are ever in such treacherous or dangerous situations, all we have to do is ask him for directions because he is not only "The Way", but the only way to find a secure life, the truth, and the safety and protection of God, our Father.

The Good News is that a sure path home is available to us once we ask Jesus to reside within our heart and guide us all the way home. The truth remains that the basic maps Jesus gives us are far better than any fallible GPS system or fancy map we can ever purchase. The priceless maps Jesus offers can be found in his own words recorded in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. If we return to the basics and read the original map instead of concentrating on books or media about the map, we will find all the guidance we need in confusing situations, scary days, ethical challenges, and difficult decisions. Try it today. Your life may depend on it.

Prayer: Jesus, Thank you for giving me the perfect map and a GPS system that never fails. May I use it well. Amen.
