May 30
"Then those who feared the LORD spoke with one another; the LORD heeded and heard them, and a book of remembrance was written before him of those who feared the LORD and thought on his name. "They shall be mine, says the LORD of hosts, my special possession on the day when I act, and I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him." - Malachi 3:16-17 (RSV)
Remembering, memories, and memorials are very important in our lives. A memorial is something which serves as a reminder. Scriptures like the one today sometimes show God’s direct participation in human history for the good of God’s people. Remembrances and Memorials reinforce our faith and provide opportunities for teaching, honoring, and healing. Malachi, the prophet of today's scripture, calls upon God's people to record their memories of loved ones who have died so that, "the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings. And you will go free..."Malachi 4:2 Healing is essential after a great loss while memorials and the sharing of memories are vital to establish lasting healing.
Memorial Day was established for a similar purpose and is now officially celebrated in America on the last Monday during May. The roots of this holiday go back to 1865 and the end of the Civil War when President Lincoln declared it a national holiday to honor the fallen and reunite the American people. Memorial Day is dedicated to those who gave their lives for freedom and country. It is also a time to remember our own loved ones who have passed over. Regardless of the date, Memorial Day is an important tradition. Take time to remember your loved ones who have passed over in whatever way you feel appropriate. God remembers those who remain faithful to him, and who loved, honored, and respected him. God's special treasures are those who loved well and faithfully. You are God's very own possession and can safely commit those you love to our Lord for safekeeping.
Prayer: God, Thank you for memories and healing! Amen.
Meditation For The Day: You are God's cherished possession.
