"LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves. What a blessing was that stillness as he brought them safely into harbor! Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them." - Psalm 107:28-31 (NLT)
Storms can appear at anytime and anyplace. If you have ever been at sea, you know only too well how quickly a calm ocean can become filled with roaring waves and a fast-sinking ship. The psalmist also knew this situation well as he so vividly describes it in today's scripture. May is much like a quiet day on the ocean. While beautiful and serene, it can be quickly interrupted by a fast-gathering storm or even tornado in the Midwest. May storms often seem to come out of nowhere and are all the more dangerous for it. William Shakespeare once said, "Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May".
The storms in our lives are much like that. We can be content and prosperous when suddenly a disaster strikes such as illness, financial difficulties, uncontrollable addictions, divorce, or many other situations causing rough seasons, thunder, and threatening dark skies. This psalm speaks of the storm-tossed and how God rescues us from the worst of life's storms. No matter how extreme our calamity, God is able to help us. Psalm 107 offers hope for those whose lives have become a mess. What storms are you experiencing in life? By asking Jesus into your ship and letting God be your pilot, you can begin a new life and not sink with the ship. By faith in Christ, we can overcome addictions, heal memories, and restore broken relationships. If you ask Christ to take control and calm the choppy waters of life's storms, he will answer you. He is a rescuer of the sinking and distressed. People who haven't suffered may not appreciate God as much as those who have known pain and hardship. Those who have experienced great problems, have potential for great praise!
Prayer: Jesus, Please calm the storms in my life. Amen.
