"Brief Devotions For Busy Lives" by Rev. Dr. Mary Johnson: Romans 12:9-13

 May 13

"Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers." -Romans 12:9-13 (NRSV)

These verses summarize the core of successful Christian living. If we truly love someone the way Christ loves us, we will be willing to persevere in prayer for them and extend hospitality. When we genuinely experience God's Grace, we naturally will pass it on to others. Christ clearly demonstrated and taught that we should treat all people with respect- including those of different races, different religions, and the handicapped, poor, young, old, male, and female. When Jesus said to "love one another", he did not distinguish between people but included all of humanity. As Christians, we need never consider others as being inferior or "beneath us".

Paul says in his letter to the Romans that we are to live in harmony with others. Rather than seeing strangers as a burden and their presence as disruptions of our routine, families, plans, or businesses, the Bible tells us to put out the welcome mat. Hospitality is a sacred obligation in the Bible. The word for hospitality is related to the word "hospital." In other words, if we practice hospitality, we will give generously and joyfully and open the doors of our hearts and even homes to care for others. In true hospitality, we will find ways to nurture, heal, strengthen, and serve others. The amazing result is many will find physical, spiritual, and emotional help through our efforts and loving concern. People around you will become healthier and more whole. If you are practicing hospitality, your home or heart can become a "hospital" for hurting and needy souls!

Prayer: God, grant me the gift of loving Hospitality. Amen.

Meditation For The Day: Hospitality heals. Indifference steals.
