April 7
"The righteous flourish like the palm tree, and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in the house of the LORD; they flourish in the courts of our God. They still bring forth fruit in old age, they are ever full of sap and green, to show that the LORD is upright; he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him." - Psalm 92:12-15 (RSV)
April is a time of new beginnings and new promises. Old achy bones feel rejuvenated by the April sun that puts a youthful step in our walk. Children prance in the joy of the first violet while robins revisit our yards announcing spring is coming. Life begins to flourish again in April. Even the elderly feel renewed energy. As Shakespeare said, “April hath put a spirit of youth in everything.” The psalmist in today's scripture may have been describing April when he compares the righteous to palm trees which are known for youthful vigor, flexibility, and versatility. He says when people take root in God's gardens, we will then flourish like palms and grow strong as cedars. The Cedars of Lebanon grew over 120 feet high and 30 feet wide. They were solid, strong, and immovable. The writer is saying that servants of God who plant themselves in God's Kingdom will also become upright, strong, and unmoved by the winds of circumstance.
If you place their faith and life firmly in God's hands, you too can have the strength and vitality of cedars and the flexibility, youthful vigor, and versatility of palm trees. The bible promises you will bear fruit in old age and maintain a youthful "can do" spirit. Even in old age, you can continue to have a fresh outlook and teach others with wisdom from long service to God. There is no reason any of us to fear old age. It is revered by God and provided as a time to share wisdom, love, guidance, and strength. God does not discriminate against the elderly but values elders as crown jewels in his kingdom.
Prayer: Lord, Thank you for your beautiful plans for my old age and your promise of youthful renewal. Amen.
