Brief Devotions For Busy Lives" by Rev. Dr. Mary Johnson: Proverbs 16:3

 March 13

Commit your actions to the LORD, and your plans will succeed." -Proverbs 16:3 (NLT)

March is often a magical time when we first see hints of the coming spring as crocuses peek above the snow and the first robin is spotted on the lawn. It offers us a fresh space for dreaming about the unlimited possibilities of warmer days ahead. It is also a time when plans for the summer can enter into our heads with both enthusiasm and anxiety. There are so many activities we may be looking forward to but might feel we don't have the personal resources or energies to achieve. Yet the author of our scripture from Proverbs seems to know the secret to success in achieving any plan when he tells us to "Commit your actions to the Lord". Yet what does the word "Commit" actually mean in the original Hebrew? Basically it is an act of trust where we "let the Lord carry the burden". It is only in this way that our plans for future summer activities ahead can truly be achieved.

Yet there are also ways we can fail to commit our plans to God. We may offer our complex plans temporarily to God, only to take them back and be filled with anxiety when the unexpected happens. In order for our new plans to succeed, we need to maintain a fine balance by working our plans as if everything depends on us and then trusting God as if everything depended on the Lord.

Prayer: Lord, remove my fears and worries as I commit my plans to you. Remove my anxieties and fill me with your peace and joy as I look forward to a time of new beginnings and opportunities in the seasons ahead. Amen.

Meditation For The Day: Do your best and leave the rest to God.
