Thursday, February 3, 2022 "Brief Devotions For Busy Lives" by Rev. Dr. Mary Johnson: Luke 3:9-14

 February 4

"John proclaimed: 'The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.' 'What should we do then?' the crowd asked. John answered, 'Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.' Even tax collectors came to be baptized. 'Teacher,' they asked, 'what should we do?' 'Don’t collect any more than you are required to,' he told them. Then some soldiers asked him, 'And what should we do?' He replied, 'Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.'” -John the Baptist in Luke 3:9-14 (NIV)

Have you ever felt oppressed? If so you can identify with Jews who were abused by Roman troops who oppressed them. John the Baptist called the crowds to turn from sin and change their ways. These mixed crowds included Jews, soldiers, and tax collectors who were notorious for dishonesty. Roman gained money by selling tax collection jobs. Tax collectors lived by adding sizable sums to taxes and keeping the profit. Unless people revolted and risked Roman wrath, they paid up. Obviously, Jews hated corrupt greedy tax collectors, who were greedy and also despised abusive soldiers. Yet, John claimed God would accept even these hated evil people if they repented and changed their actions and life. God still grants Grace and Mercy to all who repent of evil and confess their sins.

John's shocking message took root in unexpected places among the poor, rejected, despised, dishonest, and even hated Roman troops. These rejects were very aware of their wrongdoing and sought how to change. Did any follow John's advice? Multitudes did, and their hearts became ready to receive the coming Christ. John's message required 4 different responses: (1) Share what you have with those in need. (2) Do your job honestly with fairness. (3) Forsake greed. 4) Be content. John didn't bring easy words to those living bad lives. He prepared the way for Christ by calling ALL to right living. Considering John's message, are there any changes you may wish to make in your life in order to draw closer to Christ today?

Prayer: Lord, show me today where I need to change Amen.
