"Brief Devotions For Busy Lives" by Rev. Dr. Mary Johnson: James 1.17

 February 8

"Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change." -James 1.17

We live in a world of rapid change. This can be difficult to keep with and can cause stress and many disagreements as we try to make decision based on what is best for ourselves and our nation. Yet, James Finely, noted theologian, reminds us "Our spiritual task is to discern the ways in which our heart is at variance with God's heart. We see how our own subjective perceptions and intentions are compromised or violate our ultimate destiny in love. By this ...recognition, we are released and liberated." Yet realistically the state of our world today is filled with anxiety. Everyone has an opinion which is too often expressed in attacking and threatening ways. What should we do then when we encounter angry opinionated individuals? Mother Teresa says “The very fact that God has placed a certain soul in our way is a sign that God wants us to do something for him or her. It is not a chance; it has been planned by God. We are bound by conscience to help him or her.” So if this is true and Finely’s advice to discern the ways our heart is at variance with God's heart is also true- then it may be our job to “help” and not harshly judge rigid opinionated people. How would this look in today's world? First it would require restraint from getting into futile arguments. Second, we can seek common ground with those who disagree with us. Third, we can offer our different perspectives in love and avoid any desire for "winning" arguments.

While we need to realize we live in conflicted days, we also need to try to live as Christians in all circumstances! Richard Rohr in "Falling Upward" has wise advice when he says “When you get your,' Who am I?', question right, all of your, 'What should I do?' questions tend to take care of themselves.” Realize today that you are God's precious child. Then you can be free of continuing conflict and strife.

Prayer: Lord, Help me discern ways my heart is at variance with your heart. May I feel a union with Christ that blesses even those I disagree with. Amen.

Meditation For The Day: God's Peace stops strife and gives release!
