"Brief Devotions For Busy Lives" by Rev. Dr. Mary Johnson: Psalm 119:18

 February 28

"Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law." -Psalm 119:18 (NIV)

Not looking where we are going can get us in real trouble. The epidemic of broken bones and shattered glasses caused by texting while walking continues to increase in our high-tech culture. Ignoring and not looking at God's word while we rush ahead in life can yield a similar result. We can land flat on our face bruised and battered. Yet many hate laws, and feel they hinder our freedom. At first glance, then, it may seem strange to hear the writer talk of wonderful things in God's law. Many do not understand God's laws were given for our protection and to free us to be all we can be. They keep us from harm and what might injure us. God's guidelines help us follow his path and avoid paths that lead to destruction. A beloved hymn, "Open my Eyes, That I may See" written by Clara H. Scott explains this well:

"Open my eyes, that I may see
Glimpses of truth Thou hast for me;
Place in my hands the wonderful key
That shall unclasp and set me free.
Silently now I wait for Thee,
Ready my God, Thy will to see,
Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine!

Open my ears, that I may hear
Voices of truth Thou sendest clear;
And while the wave notes fall on my ear,
Everything false will disappear."

This hymn can also be used as a wonderful biblical prayer that teaches us to pause for a time of special learning as we meditate on God's word. Our lives are enriched when they include times of meditation. When we take time to truly be still before God, then his voice and will can be more clearly heard and revealed. Scripture also declares, "The Lord opens the eyes of the blind; the Lord raises those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous."(Ps.146:8) Rest today in God's love knowing his Word can protect and guides you always.

Prayer: Lord, Open my eyes to see your truth always. Amen.

Meditation For The Day: Keep your eyes on God to avoid falling.
