"Brief Devotions For Busy Lives" by Rev. Dr. Mary Johnson: Genesis 1:1-4

 February 24

"In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness." Genesis 1:1-4 (NRSV)

The Bible not only tells us the world was created by God but more importantly, it also tells us who this God is. It reveals God's personality, purpose, promises, and plan for his creation. It also reveals God's deepest desire to relate to and fellowship with the people he created. God took the ultimate step toward relating with us through his historic visit to our planet in the person of his Son Jesus Christ. Because of this divine visitation we can know in a very personal way the God who created the universe. What a blessing!

The simple statement that God created the heavens, and the earth is one of the most challenging concepts that can confront our limited minds. The incomprehensibly vast galaxy we live in is rotating at 490,000 miles an hour. But even at this breakneck pace, our universe requires 200 million years to make one rotation. Yet there are also about one billion other galaxies like ours. Some astronomers say the total number of stars is equal to all the grains of all the sands in all our beaches. Yet our complex galaxy of spinning stars exists with remarkable order. To say the universe was accidental or "just evolved" requires more faith than believing God truly did create our wonderful earth and awesome universe. Yet we need to realize also God didn't need to create the universe, rather our Lord chose to create it. Why? While we can't know the mind of God, we do know that God is love. (I Jn.) Yet Love is relational, active, and directed toward others. God creation of the world and people must then be an expression of his love. Such a creation cannot be reduced to simple scientific terms. We also need to remember God created the universe because he loves us, and each person is important and vital to him. This includes you!

Prayer: Lord, Thank you for your incredible creation. Amen.

Meditation For The Day: God can make nothingness beautiful.
