February 1
"This temple was finished on the third day of the month of Adar in the sixth year of King Darius' reign. Then the people of Israel, the priests, the Levites, and the others who had returned from exile celebrated at the dedication of God's temple." -I Ezra 6:14-16 (GW)
February is a power packed month although it is the shortest month in our year. In the midst of snowy winter, this lively month includes George Washington's birthday, Valentine's Day, Presidents Day, and usually Ash Wednesday. It is also the month in which the second Jewish temple was completed after their return from exile in 586 BC. February was called the month of Adar in Hebrew and because of this massive accomplishment; it has remained a joyous celebration time for Jews. Unlike months of our current Roman solar calendar, Hebrews had a lunar calendar reflecting moon phases. Yet no matter which calendar we use, February moves quickly and is often gone before we realize it. It offers celebration but also reflection often involving fasting or purification as preparation for spring and new beginnings. It was named after the Roman month of "Februarius" which came from the Latin februum, meaning "purification". The Roman purification ritual of Februa was held on February 15. Ash Wednesday also often occurs in February although also in March which marks the start of Lent. This remains a season of purification and fasting for Christians who remember Jesus' time of fasting and temptation in the Wilderness.
This lively month also includes George Washington's birthday, Valentine's Day, and Presidents Day. It is the shortest month of the year and only one with less than 30 days. It has 28 days or 29 days in leap years and is the third month of winter. February offers us time to celebrate, but also time to work. Both are necessary and pleasing to God. As you welcome February, open your heart to possibilities of new beginnings and unexpected miracles in your life and family. You won't be disappointed! The light and warmth of Christ is more powerful than any darkness, blizzard, difficulty, or storm February can bring in your life.
Prayer: God, Thank you for the joy February brings. Amen.
