"Moved by the Spirit, Simeon went into the temple courtyard. Mary and Joseph were bringing the child Jesus into the courtyard at the same time. They brought him so that they could do for him what Moses' Teachings required. Then Simeon took the child in his arms and praised God by saying, 'Now, Lord, you are allowing your servant to leave in peace as you promised. My eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared for all people to see. He is a light that will reveal salvation to the nations and bring glory to your people Israel.'" -Luke 2:27-32 (GW)
Have you ever waited and waited for something that was promised? If it is a long wait, we usually become discouraged or may even give up. Yet Simeon didn't give up! Why we may wonder? Luke tells us why when he writes: "At that time there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon. He was righteous and devout and was eagerly waiting for the Messiah to come and rescue Israel. The Holy Spirit was upon him and had revealed to him that he would not die until he had seen the Lord’s Messiah." (Lk. 2:25-26; NLT) This very old wise prophet was fearless, faithful, and persevered through the strength and power the Holy Spirit bestowed on him. "Simeon's Song" or prophecy recorded in today's scripture is now called the Nunc Dimittis, from the first words of its Latin translation. Joseph and Mary were amazed when this old prophet took their son into his arms and spoke such stunning words at his dedication. Simeon said Jesus was a gift from God and recognized him as the Messiah and holy Light to the entire world. Israel didn't always give equal attention to the prophecies saying the Messiah would bring salvation to all the world, not just Jews. Many thought Christ had come to save only his own people. Luke made sure his readers understood Jesus came to save all who believe, no matter your race, country, or social class.
While Simeon could depart in peace once he had seen the Messiah, you are enabled to live in peace once you find Jesus in the temple of your life. Hold Jesus in your arms today and God will fill you with his Holy Spirit and strengthen you with Hope and Joy!
Prayer: Lord, Fill my arms with Jesus and his love. Amen.
