"I am a stranger in the earth; Do not hide Your commandments from me. My soul is crushed with longing After Your ordinances at all times." -Psalm 119:19-20 (NASB)
Whenever we are strangers in a new place, we need road maps and knowledge of the local rules, laws, customs and highways in order not to get lost or end up getting into trouble. The writer of Psalm 119 realizes he is a "stranger on earth," and begged God to reveal his laws and commandments to him so he wouldn't wander on the wrong roads and get lost or waylaid on his journey on this earth. He pleaded to God for guidance and right directions when he said he was a "Stranger in the earth". The literal Hebrew translation of this sentence is “I am a resident alien in the land.” Resident aliens are especially vulnerable and need help. They need to know road rules, laws, and social and legal customs to avoid getting into trouble or becoming lost in new lands.
Almost any long trip requires a good road map or GPS. As we travel through life, the Bible should be our road map, pointing out safe routes, obstacles to avoid, and our final destination. We need to recognize ourselves as pilgrims and travelers on this earth that need to study God's map to learn the right highways. If we ignore God's map, we will wander aimlessly through life and risk missing our real destination. Our lives can be cluttered with rule books by authors who will never travel with us to help follow the rules. But God travels with us always. That is the uniqueness of the Bible. God not only provides rules and guidelines but stays with you personally each day to strengthen you so you can live according to God's road rules and guidance. All you need do is ask and then respond to directions.
Some of us resist rules, as we may feel they restrict us from doing what we want. At first glance then, it may seem strange to hear the Psalmist talk of rejoicing in God's laws as much as in having great riches. But God's rules were given to free us to be all He wants us to be. They restrict us from doing what might be crippling and enable us to be our best. God's Road Map can help you follow safe roads and avoid dangerous highways and by-ways.
Prayer: Lord, Thank you for your priceless map. Amen.
