"Brief Devotions For Busy Lives" By Rev. Dr. Mary B. Johnson: Numbers 9:23

 December 31

"They camped or traveled at the LORD's command, and they did whatever the LORD told them...."-Numbers 9:23

On this New Years Eve many of us may wonder as we approach a fresh New Year, how we can find more meaning and purpose in our lives. While we may try to do so by creating New Year's Resolutions, or vowing to "do better next year", the truth remains that none of us can ever realize or attain our true goals or purpose unless we are living in harmony and obedience to God. A good example of true obedience comes from the Wise Men who were, above all, faithful to God's guidance even in frightening foreign lands. They traveled and camped as God guided them by the unusually bright star the Lord provided as direction for their long new journey.

Whenever we follow God's guidance, we can rest assured we are exactly where God wants us to be. Whether we are moving or staying in one place, we are all "physically somewhere" right now. But are we where we want to be spiritually or emotionally? Instead of praying: "God, what do you want me to do next?", we need to ask: "God, what do you want me to do now while I'm right here?" Directions from God are not just for our next big moves. God has a purpose in placing us where we are right now even if it is frightening or confusing! We all need to begin to understand God's true purposes for our lives by discovering what He wants us to do right now, just where we already are! While this always entails obedience to doing some things we may find new or even difficult, the rewards and treasures of our new journeys are always worth it! We are all facing a long journey in the year ahead as we seek for a better life and more favorable future. Yet we are also much like the Wise Men of old who set off not sure where they were going. May you have their faith to follow God's star instead of the stars of the world. It will lead you to a great king who can give you a greater future than you can ever imagine. Wise men seek him still!

Prayer: Lord, Show me your star in the year ahead! Amen.
